  •  Please use the club's message pad to find a partner if possible.  You do need to use your MBC username and password to access it.  Alternatively, send an e-mail to me at alaric@mountnessingbridgeclub.org.uk or phone me - my phone number is available on the members' list.

  • Take time to have a look at the Message Board, where members can place short announcements that need not be Bridge-related.  This service is FREE for members of MBC.  Please send an e-mail to me at alaric@mountnessingbridgeclub.org.uk if you have a message to add.  These messages are in the 'public' area of the website, so potentially they can be read by anyone anywhere in the world.

  • The latest issue of the membership list for 2009/10 is available via the members' area or through the Website Index page.  A username & password are required to access it - please let me know if you have lost or forgotten yours.  A printed copy is available on club nights.  Please check this list: if you are not listed then it means that EITHER you have told me that you wish to be excluded OR that you have not yet renewed for 2009/10.  If needed, a printed copy of the list can be picked up on club nights.

ALERTS / ANNOUNCEMENTS

The Alerts and Announcements scheme is still causing some confusion.  I have given a link to the full 'rules' on the Director's Page, but two simple but key points to remember are:

  1. If not alerted, doubles of suits below the level of 3NT are always assumed to be for takeout.  This simple rule applies even in those situations where an experienced player might consider that the double is 'obviously' for penalties, e.g., a double of a 'rescue' from 1NT doubled if not alerted can be assumed to be for take-out.  The only exception to this rule is that the double of an artificial suit bid - e.g., a double of a Stayman bid - is assumed to be 'lead directing' and to show values / length / interest in the suit bid, so a double of Stayman would show Clubs.  If such a double has any other meaning then it should be alerted.

  2. If not alerted, doubles of No Trump bids are always assumed to be for penalties - including opening bids, re-bids, and responses, even in situations where an experienced player might consider that the double is 'obviously' for take-out, such as in the situation 1 suit, No, 1NT, x; if this double is for takeout of the suit opened (as most players would assume) then it should be alerted.  The principle covers opening bids of 1NT, 2NT, and 3NT, whether or not the 2NT or 3NT opener is alerted as conventional.

At his / her turn to bid, a player may always ask about the meaning of opponent's bids providing he / she can do so without prejudice to his / her side's interests.

BAD WEATHER SITUATION: The club will always strive to keep open whatever the weather but if police advice is that driving should be restricted to essential journeys only then it will be closed.  Check this website or phone Alaric if in doubt.  Members who have provided an e-mail address should please check their 'inbox' on club days if the weather is bad.

If you have any comments about this website or the club please send an e-mail to me at alaric@mountnessingbridgeclub.org.uk
